From the Pastor’s Pen
by Pastor Jimmy Blackman
“I can’t fix it.”Bill Cosby never would have said that. Perhaps you remember the Cosby Show, either from its first run (I do) or in reruns on TV Land. Bill Cosby always thought of himself as a capable handyman. His wife did not share that sentiment. Too many times she had seen Bill tackle what would have been a small job for a skilled repairman, turning it into a much larger job requiring much more expertise to handle. He just never could admit that he could not “fix it.”

Missions Moments
by Sharron Shands, NMI President
The Jesus Film teams around the world recently reported that more than 10,000,000 (ten million) decisions for Christ have been made over the last 12 years. Praise the Lord! Our LINKS missionaries are James and Patricia Smith. They are now retired and are pastoring a small church in Oklahoma. LINKS is Loving, Interested Nazarenes, Knowing & Sharing. We will have these for 2 years. Alabaster Offerings are needed especially in places like Africa where the church is growing so fast that the region is having a hard time keeping up. Give your love offering for Alabaster on September 5th. What is your Faith Promise offering? It is not a pledge, but is a love offering given beyond your tithe. The greatest event of our church year is Faith Promise Weekend, September 25 & 26. You will enjoy hearing Brian Helstrom. The NMI Dinner is on October 6th. We have guests that night from the Hermitage Church of the Nazarene. They will share about their recent trip to Africa.
November 7-14 are when our Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes need to be turned in. These are for Samaritan's Purse. We fill the boxes with toys and items that will excite children around the world that do not have much. November 21st is the Sunday that we give our Thanksgiving Offering. We all have so much to be thankful for so we give to help others.

Old Hickory Youth Excited about Him!
by Pastor Chad, Pastor of Youth and Families
SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning." (John 1:1-2) In the first chapter of his book about Jesus, John packs some huge ideas about Jesus into just a few simple sentences. That's good writing. Even those of us who take God's Word as just that don't often give it credit for being well written. God took great care to make sure the words used to communicate His Word were not just meaningful, but also delivered with excellence.

Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries
by Shawna Ruffin, SDMI President
Wow! It’s been a BIG job getting acquainted with all the details and ministries under the SDMI umbrella and an even bigger job getting my feet wet as the SDMI President. I don’t know about you, but when I thought about SDMI, my first thought is Sunday School. While that is a large and important ministry for SDMI, it is certainly not the only emphasis. SDMI stands for Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries International. Discipleship is more than passing on information. It’s means we develop relationships by immersing others with the love of Christ by teaching them to obey all that Jesus commands us. We do this by breaking up our teaching into different ministries. At Old Hickory these include Children, Youth, Adult, and Missions. These ministries are broken down even further into things like, Quizzing, Caravans, Refuel, Men’s, Women’s, and even Greeters and Ushers. I don’t know about you, but I had no idea that SDMI meant all of that in addition to Sunday School.

Do all the good you can...
by Randy Kinder, Pastor of Worship Arts & Admin.
“Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can.” John Wesley writes these words (though there is some dispute as to whether or not they are his) and lived his life by this principle. It was a life that was not easy. It often lead him into difficult and trying situations, left him weary and broken, caused him great physical and emotional turmoil, and stole his heart. It was his sheer and utter love and passion for God that drove him. After all, God had so drastically changed him and transformed him through the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, how could he help but do “whatever it took” to minister.
